Commercial Auto Insurance

Commercial Auto Insurance

Commercial auto insurance covers a variety of vehicles, trucks, cars, and drivers, as well as many types of motorized equipment. Vehicles are often serving the dual purpose of personal and business related activities, an issue solved through the purchase of commercial auto insurance. Many businesses have employees that use their own cars for company related work. Conversely, businesses often own vehicles that are also used for the personal needs of the employee. As the business owner, it is necessary to make sure both your business and employees are correctly insured with a commercial auto policy.

Hired/Non-owned Auto Liability Coverage provides business insurance coverage for certain liabilities arising from the use of a rented or leased vehicle (hired), or a non-owned vehicle such as one owned by an employee in use on company business. For example, if an employee drives his or her own car to make a bank deposit for the business and is in an accident with another driver, his or her insurance company will pay the claim up to her policy limit. But if the other driver sues your company for additional damages, a basic business owner’s policy won’t suffice. Commercial vehicle insurance with an added “non-owned auto liability” endorsement could help protect your company’s assets from an expensive lawsuit. Oftentimes this coverage can be added inexpensively to a business auto policy, or in some cases, a general liability policy. A business that owns and has vehicles titled in the company name will need a commercial auto insurance policy.

There are times when the business owner’s only vehicle serves double-duty for both company and personal use. In these cases, company car driver insurance is necessary. For added protection when it’s not used for business, an important endorsement called “drive other car” covers the owner and any family members who might drive the car.

Ohio - What is the proper coverage and coverage limits for your auto insurance?
Along with state requirements, your auto finance or leasing company may require you carry:

– to pay for losses you cause others
– to pay you and your passengers for medical and related expenses caused by injuries from a car accident, regardless of who is at fault
- to pay for damage caused to your vehicle in an automobile accident. Standard collision coverage will pay for any repairs up to the fair market value of your car. Collision coverage usually also comes with an insurance deductible. It’s the amount of money you pay toward repairs before your collision insurance kicks in. The higher the deductible you’re willing to pay, the less the collision coverage will cost.
- or OTC (Other Than Collision) to pay for damage done to your car in some way other than a collision, such as if it were stolen or vandalized. Flood, hurricane, theft, windshield damage and fire are also events usually covered by comprehensive car insurance. Like collision, comprehensive will pay up to the fair market value of your car (less your insurance deductible).
